What is spandex?
Spandex is fiber or clothing that is stretchable. With the changing clothing requirements and increasing awareness among the individual regarding clothing, it becomes pertinent to use the separate fiber for the sport wears. Yes, you have guessed it right Spandex is the widely used material to form sports clothing including bathing suits, bras, underwear, trousers and cycling shorts.
Because of the elasticity that this fabric offers it becomes easy for the athletes to wear it close to their bodies. The tighter the clothing, the more convenient it becomes for them to move freely.
Why use Spandex?
Spandex is the general term used for synthetic fiber with enhanced elasticity. As we have mentioned above, it offers freedom of movement however this is not it. Spandex is the best alternative of rubber as it returns to its original shape after taking them off. So it also offers durability.
What is the difference between Lycra, Spandex and Elastane?
- Spandex and Elastane:
Spandex was the name given to the elastic fiber usually used in the athletic clothing in America. However, for the rest of the world, the term is Elastane. There is not at all any technical difference between Spandex and Elastane instead these two are the synonyms defining the same material.
What about Lycra?
Now come to the word Lycra, well, you might be heard of the term Lycra a product name of the famous brand-DuPont. So basically, the DuPont Company is offering Spandex Material under the brand name of Lycra.
If you intend to buy the Lycra products made from spandex, it is alright to call it spandex only. However, when you use spandex products from other companies, it is better to call them spandex only instead of Lycra.
If you are buying Elastane products in the USA, it is prudent to call them Spandex for your ease while for the rest of the world you can use the term Elastane.
So, at the end of the article, all we want to add is that there could be a difference in the inclusion of the material clothing like 90% of the cotton and 10% of Spandex however apart from that there is no difference in the three.
